Prayer and Politics: Strange Bedfellows?

Introduction

Prayer and politics: the title initially suggests a tension. However, maybe that is because we in the West have inherited a dichotomy that is contingent on our experience, not inherent in the topic.

One could say they have some things in common: a political decision can have an impact on the whole of our lives; and prayer can also lead to decisions that change my whole life. Both prayer and politics can bring home to me my powerlessness.

In fact, I wish to suggest that while they are separate activities, they can overlap and interpenetrate each other, but much will depend on the attitudes of the person and the wider community.

In this talk, I am going to point to our background of resistance to linking religion and politics, and then proceed to ask why bring these two topics together? And how might we do it?
